“Expression of Coffee” by Fahmi DNR
This artwork was created as a visual response to the sensations that arise from a cup of coffee. To me, coffee is not merely a drink—it is an emotional trigger, a surge of energy, and sometimes even a small but delightful chaos. Through this painting, I attempt to capture an honest, fleeting moment: the shift in expression that occurs shortly after caffeine begins to take effect in the body.
The main character’s face is depicted with an unusual expression: wide-open eyes, furrowed brows, and a pouting mouth—as if caught between surprise and excitement at the same time. This expression represents the “mixed feelings” I often experience after drinking coffee, especially when I am already tired or stressed. There is a kind of energy explosion whose direction is unpredictable—it can become productive, or turn into a creatively restless state.
The character’s hair is drawn long and flowing, intertwined with patterns of coffee beans that appear to float and scatter in all directions. These patterns symbolize how caffeine works on the mind: nonlinear, irregular, yet constantly in motion, triggering wild ideas that emerge suddenly. The bold, wavy hair colors also reflect disorder that remains aesthetic—because for me, chaos can possess its own kind of beauty.
The background is composed of spirals, flowers, and layered organic forms swirling in shades of pink, green, yellow, and blue. These elements represent a surge of energy—a suddenly crowded inner world after taking a sip of coffee. I want to show how the inner landscape can undergo a significant transformation from something small and simple: a cup of coffee.
Overall, this painting functions as a form of visual humor—a light yet honest expression of everyday experiences that many people may also relate to. I believe art does not always have to be serious. Often, in the funny, odd, and spontaneous moments—like this exaggerated facial expression—we can be more truthful with ourselves.
Through “Expression of Coffee,” I invite viewers to see that exhaustion does not always need to be mourned, and that running out of energy is not necessarily a bad thing—it may simply be a pause before a burst of creativity. And coffee, in this context, acts as a spark, like fuel in the engine of inspiration.
I also embed a small message in this work: unconventional expressions are valid. It is okay to feel mixed up, confused, restless, overly energized, or even “overthinking” after drinking coffee—and that is perfectly fine. Because from honest, unfiltered expressions, the best ideas often emerge in my creative process.
With this artwork, I hope that anyone who sees it can laugh, feel surprised, or feel relatable—because the expression of coffee is not just mine, but belongs to all of us who have ever made coffee a loyal companion in creating, thinking, or simply getting through the day.
